A Tuesday That Wanted to Move Fast

Yesterday was Tuesday, and a month had passed since the blood work at haematology and the visit to infectious diseases.

I got through my time there in well under an hour, even though I had a fair walk between the departments.

It almost felt like I had ended up in a VIP line.

Fast it was, at any rate.

Then the hairdresser was the next stop.

Same thing there: a bit of a summer cut, and just like that I was done there too.

And since everything went so fast, I thought: then I’ll drive out to Ramnäs forge.

Behind that hatch the fire used to live. You opened, you fed it, you closed. It went in rhythm, for decades, and the bricks around it are still cracking from the heat they took.

What I Missed

This was, after all, something I missed with the Prisma photo group.

I got home rather late from the Stockholm trip on Monday, and after that there wasn’t much left of the day.

But if I go now, I thought, then in a way I’ve been there this week too.

Then I’m back in step with the group.

I had the code, of course.

So it was just a matter of walking in.

A Few Centuries Back

A Few Centuries Back

And walking in there is walking backwards.

Not ten years, not fifty.

A few centuries.

The first thing that meets you is the silence in a room that was built for noise.

The roof trusses arch overhead like a church, the light comes in through narrow windows high up, and down in the dark the machines are still standing.

No one has moved them.

Because that’s how it lies: the tools are set out around the places they belonged to.

The tongs by the hearths.

The bars leaning against the pillars.

The scale with its big round dial, turned toward the door, as if it were still waiting for the next load.

This isn’t a museum that has arranged things for display.

It’s a house that has let them lie.

And that does something to you.

You walk quietly.

You touch nothing.

You think about the hands that held all this every day, twelve hours at a time, and whose names nobody wrote down anywhere.

The light comes in through the window the way it always has, slowly, not knowing the work is over. It settles over brick and stone and over the great hammer that once made the whole house tremble. She stands with her feet apart in the middle of the room, heavy as a verdict, and sleeps. Nothing moves. But listen: the room is holding its breath. As if it were still waiting for the next blow.

Rust, Dust and a Feather

The further in I got, the smaller the thing I wanted to photograph became.

First the whole hall.

Then the hammer.

Then a handwheel, a pulley, a railing draped in cobweb.

And finally, in the middle of all that iron, one small feather caught in a thread, hanging there and shining in the dark.

All the heavy things in this house.

And the only thing that shines is the lightest thing there is.

Leica M11 Monochrom

I’ve been here before.

But never with a Leica M11 Monochrom.

And that’s a different matter altogether.

The camera wants exactly what is in here: rust, dust, light coming in at an angle, black that is truly black.

It doesn’t ask for colour.

It asks for contrast, and there is plenty of that in Ramnäs.

But I’m perhaps a little too careful.

I could probably push it further on the settings than I did this time.

Dare to go lower, further out, further into the dark, and see what it can handle.

That will have to be next time.

The house is still standing, after all.

It has been for quite a while.
