Medical Photography

Medical photography is one of the most fascinating and demanding fields in photography. As a hospital photographer in the plastic surgery and burns unit at Akademiska Hospital in Uppsala, I documented the patients’ journey — from the first meeting to the finished result after surgery. The work moreover called for both technical precision and great respect for the patients’ integrity.

Photographing during ongoing operations places entirely different demands than ordinary photography. The lighting is complex, the space limited and timing decisive. Each image had a medical purpose — to document surgical procedures, burns and reconstructions in a clinically accurate way. The photographs were consequently used as medical reference material and for educational purposes.

The work at Akademiska Hospital also gave me a deep understanding of human vulnerability and the body’s ability to heal. It was a privilege to follow the patients’ transformation and to contribute to the medical documentation.
