A Detour in the Morning Light

Photo Meetup Bildgruppen Prisma was the evening’s activity, so in the morning I had time for a longer walk into central Västerås.

I drove down to the spot I always set off from, then took a detour up through Djäkneberget and down around the City Hall.

Lovely just to walk – the light fell beautifully through the greenery, and it was one of those mornings when you’re in no hurry to be anywhere.

Coffee with the Guys at Global Living

By then I felt it was time for a coffee.

One of the guys is usually sitting at Global Living around this hour, so that’s where I steered my steps.

And sure enough – one by one they drifted into the café, and we got chatting over our coffee cups.

We probably solved a world problem or two as well, as usual.

Evening in Kungsör – Photo Meetup with Prisma

Then home to charge up for the evening’s photo meetup with Bildgruppen Prisma.

Today Kungsör was on the schedule, more precisely the Jägaråsen nature reserve – a place that surely would have been even nicer if we’d moved around a bit more than we did.

A Little About Jägaråsen

Jägaråsen is a popular nature area for walks right by Lake Mälaren, and it lies very close to Kungsör.

The ridge is well preserved and carries an interesting cultural history, with traces from the past 500 years.

There are several trails to wander, and you can visit the labyrinth Drottning Kristinas ridbana (Queen Christina’s riding track), Aludden or Fiskarhällen – or just walk around and find your own favourite spot.

Mostly We Just Talked – and That’s Not a Bad Thing

Mostly We Just Talked – and That’s Not a Bad Thing

But it turned out the way it often does: it was rather nice to stay seated and chat with a few members who’d rather take it easy and just relax for a while.

And there’s nothing wrong with that either – sometimes the company is half the point of a photo meetup.

Next Time: Hjälmare Docka

Next Time: Hjälmare Docka

Next time it’ll be Hjälmare Docka, set in lovely surroundings by the Hjälmare Canal.

The Hjälmare Canal is the 400-year-old link between Lake Hjälmaren and Lake Mälaren, and also Sweden’s oldest navigable canal.

There you can enjoy fine shrimp sandwiches, sourdough pizza, dessert waffles, pastries and Götlunda ice cream – so I’m already looking forward to that meetup.

Julia Nimke Photography as an experience – not documentation

Nimke stresses that she doesn’t photograph to “show what a place looks like”, but to capture the feeling of being there.

She seeks out small, often imperfect moments.

It’s the details and the mood that make an image personal.

The pictures become memories, not just documentation.

With the camera in hand she slows down, sees more, and notices the things others walk right past.

Jaime Fernandez de Bernabé

Jaime Fernandez de Bernabé is a photographer who has made a name for himself with his ability to capture the sublime in both people and places.

His style is often marked by a timeless aesthetic in which the light plays the leading role.

Here are a few distinctive traits in his work:
Style and Aesthetic

Handling of light: Fernandez de Bernabé is a master at using natural light to create drama and depth.

His images often have an almost painterly quality that brings to mind classical portrait painting.

Minimalism: There is a purity to his compositions.

By stripping away unnecessary detail, he lets the viewer focus entirely on the subject’s emotional expression or the inherent character of the setting.

Black and white vs.

Colour: He moves comfortably between monochrome images that emphasise texture and form, and colour photography where the palette is often muted and sophisticated rather than loud.

Subject areas

He covers a broad spectrum, but certain themes keep recurring:

Fashion and Lifestyle: He has worked with major magazines and brands, where he manages to combine commercial professionalism with an artistic touch.

Portraits: His portraits often feel intimate and honest.

There’s a sense that he captures a “between-the-moment” glance rather than a stiff pose.

Travel and Architecture: He documents places with an eye for symmetry and for how human structures interact with their surroundings.

Why he stands out

In an age where photography is often about quick consumption and filters, Fernandez de Bernabé’s work feels considered and slow.

There is a technical precision to his craft, but it’s the emotional resonance of the images that makes them linger with the viewer.

“His pictures aren’t just about what’s visible, but about the atmosphere created in the space between the lens and the subject.”

Jaime Fernandez de Bernabé
