A talk with the shoulder

I notice that it is easy to slack off on the exercise.

You simply push aside what you have set out to do every day.

So I probably need to have a word with that guy who sits on one shoulder and decides these things.

He has been in charge a little too long now.

Masterpieces of Photography

The Pinault Collection offers comprehensive insights into its holdings: the exhibition Remember Me.

Masterpieces of Photography from the Pinault Collection is on view at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris until January 18, 2027.

From historical photographs to contemporary images, from Gustave Le Gray to Cindy Sherman, from Dorothea Lange to Wolfgang Tillmans by way of Man Ray and Louise Lawler: with holdings comprising more than 8,000 prints, the Pinault Collection not only spans the entire history of photography, but also highlights its broad spectrum of visual approaches and techniques.

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the medium’s invention, what could be more apt than showcasing this temporal and aesthetic breadth in a major group exhibition featuring some 700 works by more than 70 artists.

Curator Matthieu Humery decided against a chronological form of presentation, instead focusing on theme-based dialogues between different eras and genres, offering viewers an open, experientially driven journey through the history of photography.

The theme of memory serves as a central thread of the exhibition.

Its title – Remember Me – was inspired by a work by Barbara Kruger, who has also transformed the museum’s famous Rotonde with a striking installation.

A central element of the exhibition is the display of over 400 photographs by Irving Penn, as well as a presentation of Raymond Depardon’s iconic series La France.

Also on view are works by Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Miller, Meret Oppenheim, Robert Doisneau, Zanele Muholi and Hiroshi Sugimoto, to name but a few.

After rain comes sunshine

This week has really been up and down with the weather.

But then came the ending, and what an ending it was.

To get out among all the colours, where the sun’s rays still warm enough that you want to sit for a long while, just close your eyes and take in the scents of autumn.

The birch leaves glow yellow out at Björnön, and Svartån lies so still through the old town that the houses can see their reflection in it.

The Leica and the phone

In any case, it turned into a few days of photography, partly with the Leica, partly with the phone app Hubbo Foto.

The app becomes more interesting every time I use it.

I find settings and think: oh, did I come up with this?

Sometimes I am actually very surprised at myself.

In black and white the world becomes simpler and at the same time stronger.

Up on the Viking grave the people stand like small signs against the sky, and at Lögastrand the sun breaks through so that everything else becomes silhouette.

Strings on my lyre

I have a few strings on my lyre, if one can put it that way.

One of them is painting, which I have not yet found the feeling to start again.

Another is photography, and there are several genres to choose from: music, street, birds, sport – and above all the job as a hospital photographer within plastic surgery at Akademiska Hospital.

Many people perhaps talk at length about what they do and what they are up to.

Perhaps it is something one should do more often oneself, so that people at least remember you for one thing.

When the legs carried

Like when I did sports myself.

I ran 10 kilometres in 37 minutes, hard to believe today.

I played football for Svartådalen in division 4 for one season and bandy for Svartådalen in division 1.

Though I preferred playing in the B team, because then you avoided the long, dull journeys.

I think I managed to play every position: up front, in midfield, in defence and a number of times in goal.

I have paddled.

I have aimed.

I have thrown.

Canoe, billiards and darts – in all of them I have competed.

The castle will have to wait

Two hundred percent

Whenever I have been eager to learn something, I have always gone all in at 200 percent.

Because nothing is impossible to learn, if you just want to.

So perhaps it is time to remind the guy on the shoulder of exactly that.
