Forty-eight hours and an ordinary week

A week of photography, as usual.

Right now I would need a 48-hour day, but at the same time I realise I wouldn’t be able to cope with it.

The architect who came late to the building site

Taking on building a phone app, Hubbo Foto, takes an awful lot of time, I have understood that by now.

Especially when it has to be really good, an app that is fun to use and doesn’t act up.

Still, I feel I am starting to get a grip on the whole build.

Being an architect is a bit new to me, but it is interesting, and you learn as long as you live.

Sure, you are too old for the job market.

Or, if you turn it around, it is nice not to have to think about work.

I can get up when I want and go to bed when I want.

It is a freedom that has taken a whole life to earn.

The birds that came and went

Today there were a few birds.

The sun peeked out now and then, and it was so nice to get out, sit down and relax after yesterday’s walking in the big city.

First came the jay, the restless splash of colour of the forest.

She tossed a peanut into the air and caught it in flight, as if autumn were a game.

A little later she stood on the log with her head raised and showed off her blue wing feathers, proud, almost haughty.

The great spotted woodpecker was more methodical.

He had found the pantry in the old stump and knew exactly what he wanted.

Meanwhile, the coal tit sat at the very top of a broken pine trunk and peered downwards, small but watchful.

Then came the blackbird, black and still, and stood for a while on the forest floor among needles and lichen.

Sometimes silence says more than song.

And then the squirrel, of course.

First he sat in stillness among autumn’s red maple leaves, as if he were posing.

But at the bird feeder it was another story.

There he hung upside down, completely absorbed by the seeds, and didn’t even notice the willow tits flying in and out around him.

There is something beautiful in being so busy with what you do that the world is allowed to pass by.

The camera that got to go home

Yesterday, on the other hand, was a heavy day.

I took the train from Västerås Central Station to Stockholm to return the Leica M11 Monochrom and pick up my Leica M11-P Safari, which had been in for repair in Wetzlar, Germany.

I would have preferred to keep the camera I had on loan.

Such a lovely camera, and what black-and-white pictures you got out of it.

It is strange how some people seem to feel a need to comment on other people’s gear, especially when it doesn’t fit their own way of thinking.

A black-and-white camera is hardly an impulse purchase without reason.

If you have had a Leica M11 Monochrom and started to appreciate the expression and the workflow, then you know what you like.

That someone else doesn’t get the point really makes no difference.

And the Safari has a completely different character, but it absolutely doesn’t need to be excused.

😄 You can appreciate both for completely different reasons.

I think there is a fairly simple principle here: I buy what I like and use what I enjoy.

You don’t need to understand it.

Sometimes it is actually best to let the frogs pass by without giving them more energy than they deserve.

Wrong museum, right day

Wrong museum, right day

First I went into the wrong museum.

I was inside Nationalmuseum and asked a young woman where the Brassaï exhibition was.

She looked a little puzzled.

At the same time I asked what it cost for a pensioner, but she didn’t believe me.

I had to show ID.

Then she asked how I managed to look so young, what creams I used and so on.

In the end she said I could slip in for free.

Lucky for that, because I wasn’t at Moderna Museet.

So it meant walking a bit further.

And when I was finally going to pay the pensioner price there, it happened again.

She wanted to see ID, because she didn’t believe I was that old.

Two young women within 15–20 minutes who made my day.

T-shirt in October and 16 kilometres in the legs

T-shirt in October and 16 kilometres in the legs

The sun was in its best mood yesterday, so it was T-shirt for most of the day.

I walked 16 kilometres, and I felt it, both yesterday and today.

Although I actually thought it would be much heavier today.

Maybe I am a bit fit after all.

Brassaï and the black and white

Brassaï and the black and white

Once inside among Brassaï’s pictures, things became calmer.

Paris at night, mannequins in lit windows, people captured in the middle of life.

There is something about his black and white that makes time stand still, and that was exactly what I needed after all the walking.

Hunger, Lådan and Prime Burger

Hunger, Lådan and Prime Burger

After so much walking, my stomach wanted energy.

I thought Lådan would be perfect, so off I went a good distance again, to Luntmakargatan 63.

Once there, it turned out they didn’t open until 5 pm.

I was an hour too early.

So the next place had to be Prime Burger on Olof Palmes gata 12, a very good burger place.

They had also expanded to three times the size since I was last there.

A small reward, and a well-deserved one.

The legs said sit down, the head said keep going

The legs said sit down, the head said keep going

The last stretch after the meal was a bit of a torment.

The legs said sit down, but the head said keep going.

The walk went through Hötorget, past the abundance of berries at the stalls, and on along Drottninggatan, until I finally came into Stockholm Central Station to buy a pensioner’s ticket home.

And this time nobody needed to see any ID.
