The shot, and the days after

I took the shot on Wednesday.

Then I was down for a good day and a half.

It is the same every time, and yet never quite the same.

Some times I end up less sick.

Other times I feel nothing at all.

I don’t want to know everything that’s in it.

What matters is that the M-protein stays away, as it has now for over a year.

For the rest of the month my body feels fine.

Well — except for these days, once a month.

Those are the hits you take to stay well.

And getting to be that kind of manfully ill once a month, I suppose that comes with it.

Saturday, a painkiller and the way into town

Then came Saturday.

A paracetamol in me, and I made my way down towards the centre.

I actually parked the car by Rudbeckianska skolan, and paid for the parking today.

Didn’t have it in me to walk that far this day.

Once down there it was coffee and small talk with Enrico and PK.

Someone mentioned that we solved the problems of the world a little faster today.

I think I was a little off for a moment there.

I was surely on some South Sea island just then.

It’s easily done, losing focus once you get on in years, so I’ve heard.

Through the shop window

On my way from there I caught Lars and Graciela, a little blurred, through the shop window at Global Living, where they sat out on the terrace.

The glass laid the street on top of them — the leaves, the balloons, the people walking past.

Outside and inside in the same pane.

Lars told me about the exhibition coming up.

I think he’s beginning to get a little nervous, in a good way.

New place, same burgers

After that came a visit to Bored Kitchen with the wife.

This burger joint used to sit out in Vallby, at the very back of the ICA store.

They had maybe four tables there, and most of the time they were taken.

Now they moved in on Thursday, right in central Västerås, and for us today was the first time there.

The burgers tasted exactly as good as always.

Bored Kitchen, Västerås. Best burger in town — and it ought to be top ten at Burger Dudes by now.

Over-peppered, or just bad timing?

Over-peppered, or just bad timing?

And that business about the taste is something I’ve actually been carrying around for a while.

After reading Burger Dudes’ old review of Bored Kitchen, where they wrote that the meat was “somewhat over-peppered” on every burger, I got a little extra curious.

Since then I’ve had time to eat at Franky’s Burger, which sits first on the Burger Dudes list, Funky Chicken Food Truck which sits second, Barrels Burgers & Beer, and on top of that I’ve tried a fair number of really good burger places in New York.

And you know what?

After those comparisons it almost feels as if Bored Kitchen wasn’t over-peppered at all — it may rather have been Burger Dudes’ taste buds having a bad day.

😂

Because when I compare it with Franky’s, for instance, where the pepper really is far more pronounced, calling Bored Kitchen “somewhat over-peppered” becomes rather strange.

Bored Kitchen have also taken a step up and now sit in a really nice place in central Västerås.

So it feels like it’s time for a new visit and a fresh verdict on the burgers — with a few more burgers in the bag and, hopefully, slightly better calibrated taste buds.

Maybe it’s simply time to swap out the taste buds for some new staff over at Burger Dudes?

😉

Joking aside: Bored Kitchen definitely deserves another chance.

The wall

The wall

Before we left I stood a while and looked at the wall in there.

Black ground, white and red lines, and in the middle of it all a rat, a snake, a bird of prey and a dandelion.

The artwork is by Tony Lorenzi.

Not a boring wall, that one.

And then Saturday was over

And then Saturday was over

That’s what a Saturday looks like when the body decides half the day and I decide the other.

A shot on Wednesday, a day and a half in bed, a paracetamol and a paid parking space.

And then, even so: coffee, old friends through a shop window, an exhibition on its way, a burger that tasted exactly the way it should.

Those are the hits you take.

But this is also what you get back.
