Bandy- VSK – Uppsala BOIS
Hat, gloves and a spare battery
This time I remembered everything.
Hat, gloves, and a spare battery — in case I ended up shooting more than planned.
You never know what mood you will be in once you are sitting there by the boards.
And there is one thing I have learned: the cold in a bandy arena does not creep in through your jacket.
It creeps in through your fingers.

Bandy- VSK – Uppsala BOIS
A mean machine all the way through
The match started well.
The women are, just like the men, a mean machine all the way through.
For most of the match the green and whites held the reds from Uppsala BOIS in an iron grip.
Snow flies as Karla Thuresson breaks away and the red shirt brakes hard behind her.
The ball travels along the boards with an opponent right on her, and it does not get past.
Isabel Robertsen stays rock hard alongside her opponent, stick against stick, and never lets go.
The few times Uppsala did get forward, only once or twice did it feel like a small chance on goal.
Just a small one.
Then it was gone again.

At the bench
On the bench side stands Stefan “Lillis” Johansson with his arms crossed and Daniel Kolsmyr next to him.
Two men in dark jackets following every change.
Behind them the scoreboard glows.
I took that picture in black and white, with a Leica M11 Monochrom.
Sometimes a picture needs no colour.
Sometimes light and shadow and two gazes turned towards the same ice are enough.

The wrong side of the ice
I sat down on the VSK side, same as last time.
The idea was simple: a few action shots of the VSK keeper making her saves.
They never came.
Everything happened at the other end.
Over there, far away, out of reach of the lens.
The second half, on the other hand, gave me clearly more to do.
Then the cameras had to work.

7–0 in the cup opener
The first match of the season ended in a 7–0 win for the women when they hosted Uppsala BoIS on Wednesday evening in the cup opener.
Charlotte Selbekk accounted for four of them.
Four times the clenched fist in the air in front of the goal.

What happens between the goals
What happens between the goals
Because it is not just the goals.
It is Kajsa Ericsson carrying the ball forward with red shirts on both sides and still finding a way through.
It is the player leaning forward over her stick with her eyes straight ahead, in full concentration.
It is the fist clenched at the goal line after a missed one-on-one — the disappointment shows all the way through the helmet cage.
And it is the ice that takes the impact.
A green and white player is left lying flat out, stick still in hand, while the play rolls on without her.
These things happen.
Bandy is speed, and speed has a price.
🙈
One more thing, while I am complaining anyway: it would have been handy if they had the numbers on their trousers too.
If they are turned at an angle, or skating away from you, it becomes impossible to see who it is.
Home with cold fingers
Home with cold fingers
The stands were sparsely filled.
The women did not deserve that.
But those who were there got to see a team that never let go of its grip.
I packed up, pulled off my gloves, and noted that the spare battery was never needed.
Next time I will bring it anyway.
